The Carabinieri of the San Nicolò Gerrei station, with the support of specialized personnel from the Sardinian Hunters Helicopter Squadron, arrested a 41-year-old farmer red-handed on charges of possession of illegal weapons and illegal possession of ammunition.

The operation followed an information gathering exercise that led the military to plan a series of targeted checks on local farms and sheepfolds.

While inspecting the barn of the arrested farmer's farm, the Carabinieri discovered a hiding place artfully created among the bales of fodder.

Inside were a Beretta 9mm pistol, complete with magazine, and a 16-gauge double-barrelled shotgun. Both weapons had visibly worn serial numbers. Seventy-nine perfectly intact 16-gauge cartridges were also found.

All the material was collected and seized pending further technical and ballistic tests. The arrested man was taken to Uta for judicial review.
