The miracle is repeated on the beach of Saline di Stintino. Only two weeks ago, the wetland located in the Sic area – Site of Community Interest had been chosen for the nesting of Kentish Plovers and Little Terns, a rare species of small birds in danger of extinction. This morning the hatching of the eggs offered a spectacle to the bathers, ready to go to the sea and set up towels and umbrellas on the most popular beach in Stintino.
The chicks, small balls of feathers, were born to the amazement of those present. The area has long been colonized by 48 Common Terns, 9 Kentish Plovers and 25 Little Terns . "The Little Terns nest between the beach and the walkways, they are small terns (Sternula albifrons) or sea swallows, while the Kentish Plover is a small bird typical of the Italian coasts, at great risk of extinction due to the spring frequentation of the beaches of the coasts", explains Danilo Pisu, wildlife technician and one of the major ornithological experts, founder of the Fauna Study Center that operates in Stintino and Asinara for the conservation and studies of wild fauna.
The area was delimited and secured by the Forestry and Environmental Protection Corps , led by Commander Antonello Molino, by the Local Police officers, under the command of Monica Zolesi, and by the Barracelli led by Gavino Depalmas, who also took care of the garrison to ensure the safe hatching of the eggs and the flight of the chicks, as ordered by the mayor Rita Vallebella. In Italy, there are approximately 600 Kentish Plovers and approximately 3,500 Kentish Terns. "For this reason, the Saline area is particularly important for the reproduction of these species," Pisu emphasizes.
