The Sassari Financial Police have intensified their controls to combat tax evasion and illegal activities in the hotel and non-hotel accommodation sector. Last summer, the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Finance Police) focused in particular on short-term rentals , not only in the Costa Smeralda area but throughout northern Sardinia. The inspections were aimed at recovering tax revenue, as well as protecting the market and consumers, and involved owners and online platforms. The Guardia di Finanza (Italian Finance Police) cross-referenced data from the main OTA platforms, web portals, and apps with the " National Database of Accommodation Facilities ," further supporting this by conducting several on-site inspections of local economic control services to verify the possession and display of the National Identification Code and/or IUN, a code issued by the Region.
Numerous fines were imposed on several individuals for operating an unauthorized accommodation business, for failing to display the CIN (Individual Inclusion Code), for failing to display the Unique Numeric Identifier (Identificato Unico Numerico ), and for property security violations, totaling over €116,000. In Olmedo, for example, it was discovered that the owner of a property, in addition to violating the regulations regarding the aforementioned codes, was renting cars to guests for €50 per day, despite not having a VAT number and therefore without authorization. The man was reported for operating an unauthorized accommodation business. The police reconstructed the rental income, finding over €60,000.00 in untaxed amounts . He was also charged for failing to provide guests' personal details via the "alloggiatiweb" portal.
