A club that smells of history and memories. This is the former fighters' club in Sestu that will soon become a new multipurpose theater for citizens. During the works, however, a painting made in 1970 by Giorgio Loi emerged that has found great interest from citizens, and many hope for its possible maintenance in the new structure.
The artist himself told the story of the work: «It is a tricolor flag and a helmet, emblem of the Italian army of the last war. I made it in 1970 in the former section of the Sesto fighters demolished in recent days. I think it would be a shame if it were destroyed or walled up».
At the moment, however, given the many years of the work, it is difficult to save the mural also because it was painted directly on the plaster: "The only solution - explains Loi - would be to reserve a large area for it in the same place where the painting is located, obviously one that is accessible. If it were an obstacle to the project, perhaps the only technique could be to carefully detach the plaster with appropriate techniques and reposition it in another site".
A flag and a club that bring back many memories for the descendants of the fighters. One photo in particular was recovered from a room with the fighters section before the demolition and posted on social media, with many proud comments from the relatives of the fighters.
"My father was able to receive the diploma of honor directly from the Ministry of the Interior. The award ceremony took place 3 years ago at the Prefecture in Cagliari", says Orlando.
"Honor to all our grandfathers and fathers! Mine fought in Ethiopia," adds Giuseppe.
"My grandfather Efisio Manunza, born in 1913, left when my mother was about 22 days old. He was taken prisoner in Greece and then returned to his homeland after 6 years", the testimony of an uncle of Nicoletta.
In the meantime, while we wait for news regarding the mural, we have carefully removed the plaque that will be part of the new theatre, as Mayor Paola Secci explains : «The plaque was removed before the demolition and will be positioned visibly in the theatre in memory of these heroes from Sesto who fought in the resistance».
A structure that meant so much to its citizens, that still today evokes so much pride, but that in an even more significant way leaves its witness to the theatre that represents the highest form of culture and freedom.
