They defrauded an elderly woman from Selargius by posing as one of her sons and convincing her, via text messages, to deposit €2,300 onto a prepaid card.

Two women , a 40-year-old and a 29-year-old, both living in Southern Italy , were reported for the scam. The duo used fraudulent messages to trick the victim into believing that a family member in financial difficulty was on the other end of the line.

The investigation stemmed from a complaint filed by the victim , who was contacted last December by an alleged family member. The two suspects skillfully manipulated her, convincing her to make the payment.

The scam script is not new to law enforcement . The process is always the same: the victim receives a text message or phone call from someone pretending to be a relative in need of help. One of the most common ploys is: "Mom, I lost my phone and I need money. Can you answer this number?"
