Sea urchins: the "sowing" in the Gulf of Alghero is underway

Phase two of the sea urchin restocking program is underway in Alghero.
A pilot project carried out by the protected marine area of Capo Caccia – Isola Piana, the University of Sassari, Agris and Imc Oristano and which, in recent days, sees underwater researchers engaged in an attempt to place the small sea urchins on the bottom of the bay.
But not only. Millions of specimens still in the larval stage (born and raised in the laboratory) have been released into the sea, with massive launches in the Gulf of Alghero. Sea urchins are now at risk of extinction and a rescue plan for the bogamarì has started from Alghero, the city of the traditional festival, an initiative which, if all goes well, could be replicated on a large scale in many areas of the island.
The team is coordinated by Giulia Ceccherelli, from the University of Sassari, Nicola Fois, from Agris, Paolo Mossone, from the IMC of Oristano and Alberto Ruiu, the contact person for scientific monitoring of the marine protected area.
