"Nearly 7,000 fewer teaching and ATA positions starting next school year. This is an unacceptable decision, which risks weakening state schools and the quality of education. We call on the government and Parliament to remove these cuts from the budget. The declining birth rate cannot be used as a pretext for staff cuts."

PierPaolo Bombardieri, general secretary of Uil, and Giuseppe D'Aprile, general secretary of Uil Scuola, jointly declared this regarding the provisions of the budget bill .

Specifically, they explain in a note that, at the national level, the measure provides for a reduction of 4,925 teaching positions and 2,049 ATA positions from 2027/28, in addition to the cuts already implemented: 5,660 teachers from 2025/26 and 2,174 ATA positions from 2026/27.

If confirmed, the new reductions would bring the total number of places cut over three school years to 14,808 .

Added to these data are the decidedly more negative ones regarding the decline in the school population by 2040. These are projections linked to depopulation. They were developed by the Agnelli Foundation based on ISTAT data. Corriere della Sera reports them today.

Among the Italian regions , Sardinia is the one that will suffer the greatest reduction in both student and teacher numbers. In fourteen years , the island will have a student population of 128,029 , corresponding to a 37.9% decrease compared to the current level. Class sizes will be 5,535 (-39.7%), and teachers will be 9,765, exactly 39.6% fewer than those currently employed. The worst situation after Sardinia is attributed to Basilicata, where the decline in all three indicators stands at just under 32%.
