Sixteen reports in just two weeks. This is the result of the Carabinieri's efforts to combat fraud, which occurs through online channels, telephone scams, and private sales platforms. And in some cases, the stolen goods have even been recovered.
In San Gavino, officers from the town's station identified two men originally from Campania who had defrauded a pensioner using the ruthless "fake child in difficulty" technique: by simulating a serious car accident, they managed to obtain several thousand euros through bank transfers and top-ups, then transferred the funds to foreign accounts to hinder their traceability. The investigation, however, led to the recovery and seizure of part of the money.
Another increasingly common type of scam involves fake real estate ads and phantom sales on social media platforms and online marketplaces. A Roman woman was reported in Gonnosfanadiga after pretending to rent a property, collecting four hundred euros from a young woman.
In Sant'Antioco and San Vito, the charges targeted a Calabrian woman and a Piedmontese man, respectively, who had received payments for the fake sale of a marine engine and construction materials advertised on social media, but then disappeared immediately afterward. A nearly identical pattern was observed in Guasila, where a man lost several hundred euros believing he was purchasing a refrigerated counter from three foreign citizens residing in the peninsula, who have now been charged.
Scammers are increasingly exploiting fraudulent websites, purposefully created to replicate real companies. In Mandas, two men from Campania were reported for tricking a victim into paying several hundred euros for a vehicle rental through a website copying a well-known car rental company. In San Vito, a young woman from Rome got into trouble for collecting the agreed-upon price for a car part through a fake car scrapyard website.
Furthermore, false promises of easy profits are not lacking: in Castiadas, a young man from Campania was reported for convincing a resident to pay several thousand euros with the promise of particularly favorable financial returns, which, of course, were never paid. Finally, in Vallermosa, a complex and detailed investigation led to the indictment of four individuals implicated in laundering the proceeds of the crime. The suspects, once they received the fraudulent funds, attempted to cover their tracks by dividing them into various bank accounts linked to them.
The Carabinieri's advice on how to protect yourself from scams
Given the continuing evolution and spread of these crimes, the Carabinieri reiterate their call for maximum vigilance to effectively protect themselves. The techniques used by criminals are increasingly sophisticated and insidious, often simulating the identity of institutional entities or exploiting emotional urges to stifle victims' clarity of thought, as in the case of the fake relative in distress.
To protect yourself, it's essential to never trust sudden requests for money, especially if accompanied by a request not to interrupt the call. It's essential to always verify the caller's identity by ending the call and independently contacting official channels again. When making online purchases, be wary of prices that are clearly too low compared to market averages, and never abandon the payment and messaging systems integrated into sales platforms. These systems offer significantly greater protection than direct bank transfers or top-ups on prepaid cards registered to unknown persons.
Finally, it is recommended to promptly report any suspicious incident to the Carabinieri, even if the scam was unsuccessful, as every single detail can be crucial to the investigation and dismantling criminal networks. These recent and ongoing operations demonstrate the Carabinieri's unwavering commitment to preventing and repressing property crimes. A vigilant, attentive, and widespread presence throughout the country, it aims to protect the most vulnerable segments of the population and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
