Necropolis of Montalè monument protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This is the idea of the Municipality of Sassari with Cesim, the Identity and Memory Study Center. After the latest inspections by archaeologists and experts in the Domus de Janas at Li Punti, the intentions are to include the site among those protected by UNESCO and try to find the resources necessary to restore and make the monument dating back to the Neolithic accessible.

The idea was launched while waiting for UNESCO to accept the candidacy of the site Art and Architecture in the Prehistory of Sardinia by inserting the Domus de Janas in the World Heritage List . Supporting the choice, which will be made in Solfia next July, is the Network of Municipalities of the Domus de Janas, an aggregation of 60 Sardinian local administrations supported by Cesim.

It is the only Italian candidacy for 2025 with Sassari at the forefront: in addition to the 3,500 catalogued tombs, the fortified village of Monte Baranta in Olmedo, the dolmen of Sa Coveccada in Mores and the pre-Nuragic altar of Monte d'Accoddi in Sassari are also candidates . The latter represents a unique monument in the entire western Mediterranean, with a structure that recalls the Mesopotamian ziggurats of the third millennium BC. Education and promotion of heritage can also make use of the teaching project promoted by the Culture sector of the Municipality of Sassari with the National Museum "Giovanni Antonio Sanna".

«The city schools will be able to live a new educational experience thanks to the project Telling our prehistory, between shop windows and monuments» , says the archaeologist Domenica Lissia, promoter of the initiative and head of educational services of the Thàmus civic cultural network.

"For some time now, archaeology - says Mayor Giuseppe Mascia - has brought to light an underground treasure and has rewritten the history of the civilizations that have inhabited or passed through our territory. The notoriety of these assets, their cultural relevance, their historical importance and their potential induced are not consistent with their value. Let us avoid at all costs the risk of yet another missed opportunity to develop the tourism segment based on the valorization of cultural heritage".
