The Sassari Prosecutor's Office is the next stop. "The elephant in the room," the committee protesting the pig farm in Caniga, is ready to take action through institutional channels.
A few days ago, he filed a complaint, addressed to the prefect and the mayor, among others, highlighting the alleged shortcomings of the facility, which, since October, has housed just under 1,500 pigs destined for weaning. And while the managers of the facility, Antonio and Andrea Moro, members of the "Il Grugno" brand, have found no irregularities, having received approval from the Local Health Authority and the Palazzo Ducale, the committee lists, in its opinion, some.
Among these is the failure to verify compliance with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Recalling the size of the farm, "L'elefante" maintains that the activity should have followed this step, without which "any subsequent sectoral authorization would be illegitimate."
Furthermore, the authorization from the DUA (Single Self-Certification/Enablement Declarations) would be insufficient or inappropriate because, in the committee's opinion, the AUA (Single Environmental Authorization) would be needed. The residents are asking the authorities for a joint inspection of the facility, they write, "to verify the actual livestock numbers and the compliance of all authorizations (urban planning, environmental, and health)."
As well as "the immediate suspension of the current business, should the lack of the necessary environmental and health permits required by law be confirmed, with the consequent application of the appropriate sanctions." If this is not the case, they are prepared to take legal action.
