A scammer who defrauded his victims by posing as a Carabiniere has been arrested in Sassari . Carabinieri officers recently arrested a 33-year-old man from Campania , accused of at least five scams carried out between September 29th and 30th.
The police intervened after the victims reported the incident to the Carabinieri station. They immediately realized that the same person was behind the aggravated fraud, also due to the obvious similar modus operandi. All the victims had been contacted by landline telephone by a man claiming to be a Carabinieri marshal. He then raised the alarm about a recent alleged jewelry theft , which would be investigated to identify the perpetrators. The suspect managed to convince the callers to check the identity of the suspect, prompting them to hand over all the jewelry in their homes to a colleague who would show up at their door in civilian clothes.
The incidents occurred several times until the timely intervention of the Carabinieri. The fake Carabiniere who was going to the victims' homes was tracked down and stopped while trying to escape from the home of the last victim, in chronological order . In the man's backpack, the Carabinieri found €445 in cash and several gold jewelry pieces weighing 370 grams and approximately 20 grams of silver, with a total estimated value of approximately €50,000. These were the proceeds of the latest scam alone, and were returned to their rightful owners.
A package containing other gold items, weighing approximately 102 grams, was later found at the B&B where he was staying. Investigations are underway to determine the identity of those entitled to them. The arrested man is being held in Bancali prison.
