Three men have been charged in Sassari with receiving stolen goods, illegal waste combustion, and unauthorized waste disposal. Carabinieri officers from the Ecological Operations Unit, along with colleagues from the Sassari Operations and Mobile Unit, discovered, on February 23, a plot of land measuring approximately one hectare, containing an unauthorized landfill site, containing various types of waste and without any permit. The three men were caught while cleaning hundreds of meters of copper cables from their plastic sheathing.
The Carabinieri confirmed that an unauthorized landfill had been set up for hazardous and non-hazardous waste from the scrapping of motor vehicles and metal recovery. Approximately 70 tons of waste were abandoned and mixed together. Specifically, over a ton of copper cables was found, presumed to be the proceeds of receiving stolen goods.
The total value of the ferrous metal and copper recovered is estimated at approximately €200,000. Further investigations into the recovered stolen goods are underway to identify the rightful owners, while the three men have been reported at large to the Sassari Public Prosecutor's Office, which has ordered the seizure of the entire area, also with a view to its future environmental restoration.
