She expressed the concept of "Circular Health" in a brilliant "lectio doctoralis" where she explained in a simple and even entertaining way why human health depends on so many environmental factors. A world-renowned scientist, Senior Fellow of Global Health at Johns Hopkins University SAIS Europe, and a great communicator, Professor Ilaria Capua captivated the audience in the Aula Magna of the University of Sassari.
And the University of Sassari truly could not have chosen a better recipient for the first honor of this kind in its 463-year history, because Ilaria Capua embodies the values of ethical research, as the various speakers who preceded her have emphasized. "Air, water, and land pollution impacts what we eat and drink, and therefore our health. Rising temperatures and related incidents alter the ecosystem," the scientist said.
Ilaria Capua then emphasized that Italy is the European nation with the highest percentage of deaths (including hospital deaths) due to multidrug-resistant bacteria: "We have used too many antibiotics, both for humans and animals, and we must reverse the trend."
Before the ceremony presided over by Rector Gavino Mariotti and the Academic Senate, Ilaria Capua planted a tree in the botanical garden in memory of Rina Mazzette , professor of Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, who passed away prematurely.
This afternoon, from 3 to 5 p.m., Professor Capua will be back in the Aula Magna for a meeting organized by the Order of Veterinarians of the Province of Sassari . She will return to the topic of "Circular Health and Multidisciplinarity in Public Health."
