Two dogs were killed in Lu Padru in 2020. They died in great pain after ingesting snail pellets, which the Sassari prosecutor's office believed had been specifically designed to harm the two animals. One person, a 63-year-old former Carabiniere from Sorso, a neighbor of the dogs' owners, has been charged with killing and animal cruelty.
He was also charged with threatening because, according to the indictment, he allegedly told his neighbors: "You should only have one dog. If you don't kill the others, I'll kill them myself."
Today, the parties held a hearing in court in Sassari, where prosecutor Erica Angioni found the charges to be true and requested the man's conviction. Defense lawyers Angelo Vacca and Enrico Cossu argued that there was no evidence and that their client had nothing to do with the incident. Judge Sara Pelicci ordered his acquittal on the charges of murder and mistreatment, "because he did not commit the crime" and "because the crime does not exist" in relation to the threats.
