Acquittals and statutes of limitations. Today in the court of Sassari, after 11 years, the legal case concluded which saw six people accused, in various capacities, on charges of corruption, corruption of a person in charge of a public service, theft and abuse of office.
The people who ended up on trial, for disputes dating back to 2013/14, were Stefano Pinna, Michele Mannu, Angelo Pilo, Mario Pilo, Paola Sanna and Salvatore Gavino Marceddu. According to the indictment, Pinna, as the owner of a funeral agency, and Angelo Pilo, the legal representative of the company, allegedly gave money to Mannu and Mario Pilo, who worked in the mortuary, so that they would give them information on the deaths that had occurred so that the first two could, the indictment states, "grab the clientele". Sanna, Marceddu and Mannu himself allegedly had dealings with the funeral agencies, warning them, as mentioned, of the deaths that had occurred.
According to the prosecutor Lara Senatore, all the accused should have been acquitted because there was no evidence of the charges or even of the bribes and today the panel, presided over by judge Giancosimo Mura, with Monia Adami and Sara Pelicci on his side, has ordered the acquittal of all of the corruption charges because the fact does not exist.
Mario Pilo was acquitted of aggravated theft because the fact did not exist and of abuse of office because it is not provided for by law as a crime. Stefano Pinna was acquitted instead due to the statute of limitations. The defendants were defended by the lawyers Giuseppe Conti, Gabriele Satta, Giuseppe Tiana, Gabriele Satta, Francesco Carboni and Teresa Siciliano, Pierluigi Olivieri.
