A carjacking attempt occurred last Saturday in the Sacro Cuore area of Sassari. Following a choral concert held that evening in the Basilica of the same name, one of the attendees left the church to reach her car. Once inside, a man opened the door and grabbed her purse from the seat. The victim calmly stated that there was nothing of value inside, and the thief fled into the darkness.
This incident raises alarm about what has been happening for months in the Monte Rosello Basso area. From damage to the municipal construction site in the square to threats against residents, numerous reports have been received from those reporting the rampage of around thirty youths, who roam in packs and even disrupt mass. Added to this are the increasingly frequent thefts, even within the church itself, and the general feeling of a climate reminiscent of dark times.
"It must also be said, and without justifying anyone," emphasizes Gianmario Chelo, president of the "Together for the Neighborhood" Committee, "that there is a lack of community centers for young people." No youth centers or recreational activities are available, and even the Agesci 7 scout group, crucial in keeping kids off the streets, has been forced to close after 40 years. "In the 1990s," says an elderly resident, "there was always a police van in the square because drug dealing was flourishing." And now there are fears that the past will return in another form.
