Sassari: An apartment is emptied and the rubbish is left on the street.

They emptied the apartment but, caught on camera, were identified and reported. Last September 16th, residents and citizens discovered a significant amount of waste near the dumpsters between Largo Monache Cappuccine and Largo Infermeria San Pietro.
The list is long: from paint cans to strollers, from sheets of glass to bags of various kinds of rubbish, up to parts of an air conditioner, a refrigerator and various pieces of disused furniture.
Local police officers began their investigation and, to identify those responsible, used the participatory video surveillance system established and funded by the municipality. The cameras allowed them to trace the movements of several individuals, who were attempting to move material from a building near the Capuchin Nuns' church and abandon it in Largo Monache Cappuccine.
The police traced, through additional images, the identity of a person already known to law enforcement. Once all the necessary information was gathered , both the owner of the apartment and the man identified as the person responsible for transporting and abandoning the material were reported . They are facing charges of illegal waste management and uncontrolled dumping, which carry a potential arrest and/or fine.
In the meantime, the area has been cleaned up and the waste removed. "This operation demonstrates once again the importance of territorial control, the equipment we are equipping ourselves with, and the daily work of the local police," emphasizes Sassari Mayor Giuseppe Mascia . "Behind a pile of abandoned waste, there's more than just a problem of urban decorum: there's behavior that harms the entire community," he continues. "That's why we're using every available tool to identify those responsible."
As local police commander Gianni Serra reports, "the message is clear: littering isn't without consequences. We're continuing to monitor and combat the behaviors that fuel urban decay through community services, investigative checks, and the use of video surveillance systems."
