No to intensive pig farming in Caniga. About a hundred protesters gathered this evening in Sassari's Piazza d'Italia to protest the ongoing operation at the factory in the Sassari district, which houses approximately 1,500 pigs.
"We want the institutions to take action to stop everything," says Roberto Corona of LAV. "We've started a petition and will send a mailing bomb to the city's website." Along with LAV, the Italian League for the Defense of Animals and the Environment, the Vegan Association, OIPA, Arci, and Animal Voices United are also participating.
Mayor Giuseppe Mascia and Councilor for Productive Activities Lello Panu have already spoken out about the legitimacy of the farm, maintaining that the producers are acting within the rules. But activists have serious doubts.
"We fear pollution of groundwater," Corona continues, along with volunteer Cristina Giovagnoni . "This waste could also contain residues of antibiotics administered to pigs to prevent disease. This type of farming is also described as a "presbyterian for suffering and death."
"For the animals, it's hell on earth," activists claim. "They don't see the sun, only concrete and steel, locked in cages, with their tails docked and their teeth pulled." Meanwhile, today's event won't be a one-off, and signatures can be collected again on November 9th. "But we'll also be holding a peaceful sit-in in front of the pig farm," Fatima Fiocca of the League for the Defense of Animals and the Environment reports.
