Drug dealer, or rather, not. A 29-year-old man from Sassari had been arrested in recent months by the Carabinieri for being found in possession of 33 grams of marijuana , a precision scale, and approximately €5,400 in small bills. Furthermore, his name had surfaced, indirectly, in a wide-ranging investigation into drug trafficking. All these clues had suggested to investigators that he played a significant role in the drug trade.
But the summary trial revealed a much simpler reality because, as defense attorney Tania Decortes argued, her client didn't fit the profile of a drug dealer at all, but rather a simple consumer. "I smoke because it relaxes me. I don't sell anything," the suspect justified himself.
A modest lifestyle, a steady job, no equipment to prepare the doses, and the seized sum coming from long-term savings, both his and his partner's, the latter of whom was called to testify.
Judge Sara Pelicci acquitted the man in court in Sassari a few days ago due to the lack of evidence.
