Using scooters and bicycles correctly is the central theme of the awareness, prevention, and information campaign launched by the local police in Sassari regarding the use of these two vehicles.
"They represent a modern, intelligent, and environmentally friendly choice," says Gianni Serra, commander of the Municipal Police, "but we must not forget that they are, in effect, vehicles that must circulate in compliance with the Highway Code and civil coexistence." In recent years, regulations on electric scooters have made helmets, identification plates, and third-party liability insurance mandatory, in addition to compliance with speed limits and regulations regarding places where they are permitted.
Riders are prohibited from carrying passengers or riding on sidewalks, where they must be pushed. However, they are asked to exercise particular caution near pedestrian crossings, schools, parks, and high-traffic areas. Cyclists are also asked to use bike lanes, where available, to signal ahead of any changes in direction, and to obey traffic lights, give way, and signage. They are also asked to use lights and reflective devices in the evening and at night, and to avoid using cell phones and any distractions while driving.
It's also important to remember that the sidewalk is intended for pedestrians only, and anyone over twelve must dismount their bicycle and walk it. This is part of the rules that must be followed, and failure to comply leaves the possibility of a fine from the police. In the first seven months of the year, local police officers have already issued 150 violations related to the use of e-scooters. The most common violations are two-person riding, failure to wear a helmet, lack of an identification badge, riding on the sidewalk, and parking illegally that hinders pedestrians. The campaign will also include motorcyclists, with the aim of combating reckless behavior and promoting a culture of responsible driving.
