In Sardinia the resident population is decreasing (including those of foreign nationality) and the number of employed people is also decreasing.

On the other hand, the number of working women is increasing. And women represent the majority of people who live on the island, thanks to their greater longevity.

These are some of the data highlighted by the latest update of the Istat Census on Sardinia , which made the 2021 numbers official, comparing them with those of 2020.

Here is the summary of the main data:

  • The legal population in Sardinia, defined on the basis of the Census, as of 31 December 2021, amounts to 1,587,413 residents, down by 0.2% compared to 2020 (-2,631 individuals) and by 3.2% compared to 2011.
  • The decrease compared to 2020 is due to the natural and migratory dynamics, both negative, not adequately compensated by a positive foreign migration balance and a census correction.
  • The mortality rate remained unchanged at 11.7 per thousand for both years taken into consideration, with the peak of 13.8 per thousand in the province of Oristano.
  • Foreigners registered are 48,400 (-922 compared to 2020), and have an incidence of 3% on the total resident population. They come from 151 countries, mainly from Romania (23.2%), Senegal (9.0%) and Morocco (8.5%).
  • Women make up 50.9% of the resident population, exceeding men by 30 thousand units mainly due to greater female longevity.
  • The average age increased slightly compared to 2020, from 47.8 to 48.1 years. Sassari and Cagliari are the youngest provinces (47.4 and 47.6 years respectively), while Southern Sardinia is the oldest (over 49 years).
  • Illiterate and literate people without a school qualification represent 4.7% of residents, 35.5% of residents have a middle school diploma, 31.0% have a secondary school diploma or professional qualification, 13 .4% have an academic qualification.
  • The number of people employed decreased compared to 2011 (3,774 fewer people, -0.6%), despite the increase in the female component (+4.6%); the number of people looking for work also fell (-22.7%) by around 15 thousand units, both among men and women.
