Sardinia is thirsty. And the few spring rains were not enough to fix a situation that, for months, had been promised to be a total emergency. With the summer underway and the first Sahara cyclone leaving the island, the territories of upper Baronia and lower Gallura are starting to have more and more difficulties. «An extreme drought , which after the lack of rain and the closure of irrigation in the fields of the almost dried up Maccheronis reservoir , has devastated 100% of agricultural crops including open-field vegetables and grasslands for livestock». The alarm was raised, yet another in recent weeks, by the mayor of Torpè, Martino Sanna , who every day receives dozens of calls and verbal reports from his fellow citizens.
For the mayor, what is underway is a situation «never seen before, with the emergency peak yet to arrive when, between the end of July and August, tens of thousands of tourists will reach our territories for a holiday to be taken with little water to drink , for cooking and washing in homes. A devastating picture today and one that risks getting completely out of hand in the coming weeks." So Sanna appeals to the Region, in particular to the Councilor for Agriculture, Gianfranco Satta , to ask for immediate interventions in favor of farmers and citizens. «Our businesses , especially horticultural ones, are one step away from collapse . With the losses of these months they do not have the resources to face the emergency and therefore plan the autumn and winter seasons. The funds announced as available by Satta must arrive immediately, not in three or four years. This is why it is necessary for the regional offices to deploy their best energies to ensure a strong presence of the institutions."
On the side of water supply in livestock farms and scattered houses, Sanna recalled that it is now being ensured through the tankers of the Civil Protection and the Forestas Agency which, very shortly, will divert the vehicles to the firefighting teams. «As the Municipality of Torpè – he specified – we have already appointed an external company to ensure the supply service, but the concern increases in view of the eight weeks of strong tourist presence when, with the physiological increase in consumption and road traffic, it will be almost impossible to continue to guarantee this service to citizens and farmers. Furthermore - he added - the level of stocks in Lake Torpè is falling significantly , also due to the high temperatures , putting at risk the possibility of being able to make the waters increasingly impure and affected by mud and slime drinkable".
For Sanna it is now inevitable to resort to the use of watermakers to supply the Maccheronis dam or to the construction of a "flash pipeline" that "connects our lake with that of Liscia or Cedrino". In fact, with the tankers, even if increased, «it will be impossible to address the entire emergency situation. The time for tables is over, now we just need to act."
