Sardinia is the worst place in Italy for school dropouts . In 2023, there was a dropout rate of 17.3%, practically one in six students leaves school .
In total, there are 431 thousand young people in Italy between the ages of 18 and 24 who in 2023 declared that they dropped out of school prematurely, who at most obtained a middle school diploma, but do not attend school or training courses and have not even completed a professional training course.
The numbers are provided by Cgia di Mestre, which processed Eurostat and Istat data. Among the 20 Eurozone countries , Italy and Cyprus are in third place with a dropout rate of 10.5%, worse are Spain with 13.7% and Germany with 12.8% , compared to an average of the Eurozone which stands at 9.8%.
The Italian region in greatest difficulty is Sardinia, which as we said in 2023 recorded a school dropout rate of 17.3%. Sicily follows with 17.1%, then, surprisingly, the Province of Bolzano with 16.2%. Immediately after Campania with 16% , Puglia with 12.8% and Calabria with 11.8%.
In absolute terms, the largest number of young people who left school prematurely is in Campania with 72 thousand units; followed by Sicily (62 thousand), Lombardy (53 thousand) and Puglia (38 thousand). In Sardinia there are 17 thousand .
According to data from the Ministry of Education and Merit, in the last school year 2023/2024, students enrolled in state secondary schools were 2,631,879. Of these, 51.4% attended a high school, 31.7% a technical institute and 16.9% a vocational institute.
In Sardinia there are 70,786: 37,783 attend high schools, the rest technical or professional institutes, a choice made by 46.6% of young Sardinians , compared to a national average of 48.7%. Students from the North choose technical or professional institutes, with Veneto leading the way, followed by Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Piedmont.
