A summer of fire in Sardinia not only because of the torrid climate, but also because of the negligence of some who lit dangerous fuses with imprudent behavior.
The Forestry and Environmental Protection Corps has put nine people under the microscope, reported for negligent arson : inept conduct, failure to comply with fire safety regulations and recklessness have fueled fires that could have had much more dramatic consequences.
From poorly made electrical connections in the pine forest of Santa Margherita in Pula , where sparks threatened to devour an entire green lung, to poorly maintained agricultural machinery that started flames in Arbus, Ballao and Villasor : unfortunately recurring episodes linked to lack of maintenance or sparks generated by contact with stones and metals.
There was no shortage of illegal burnings in Villacidro and Villasimius, with flames out of control that required the intervention of aircraft, and an interface fire between Elmas and Assemini triggered by the electrocution of a bird on the electrical grid , aggravated by the absence of deterrents for birdlife.
All these episodes have put forests, farmland and communities at risk, highlighting how safety in terms of fire prevention must be strictly respected . With high temperatures and dry vegetation, a spark is enough to trigger a disaster.
The reports of negligent arson, punishable by up to five years of imprisonment and the obligation to pay compensation, represent a strong warning to everyone: prudence is not optional.
The Forestry Corps invites the population to respect the regional regulations and to promptly report any outbreak of fire by calling the toll-free number 1515, active 24 hours a day.
