Sardinia, an island of old people: few workers and welfare at risk.

The start of retirement for those born in the mid-1960s marks the point of no return. Far from a demographic winter, we're now heading straight for catastrophe. Our communities will be made up of very few souls, old and lonely, because families, too, are entities on the verge of extinction.
And while today in Sardinia there are 58 inactive people for every 100 working people (a figure in line with the national average), it is estimated that in the not-so-distant future, by 2050, the ratio will be one to one, and no other region in Italy will have such a critical imbalance between those who are unemployed and those who are employed and contribute to the welfare state.
According to population forecasts prepared by Crei Acli based on Istat data, the island continues to record the worst performances in almost all indicators, while at a strategic-political level, no effective countermeasures to reverse the trend are in sight.
