The Lussurgiu community is mourning the passing of Francesco Serra, commander of the Barracelli barracks in Santu Lussurgiu and former municipal councilor for agriculture. His ailing body, unable to withstand the latest crisis, passed away last night at just 55 years old.
A respectable and highly respected man, he dedicated himself greatly to the Lussurgese community. Councilor for Agriculture during the Emilio Chessa administration from 2010 to 2015, he was one of the most ardent promoters and founders of the Compagnia Barracellare, which he led from its inception in 2011. He was always on the front lines with the rural police for environmental surveillance, patrolling the vast municipal territory year-round. During his leadership, the Barracellare ensured comprehensive and widespread monitoring services to combat illegal activities in the countryside, including firefighting, which was at the forefront of the major fire five years ago.
A painful loss for the Lussurgesi and for the Barracellari companies of Montiferru and its province, who remember him with affection and respect. Former Mayor Chessa recalls him with emotion: "I had the honor of having Francesco at my side as municipal councilor for Agriculture. I remember him as a gentle, loyal person, always willing to collaborate. Thanks to his commitment, we were able to reestablish the Barracellari Company after more than half a century to make our countryside safer. He paid a very high price for that decision, suffering two arson attacks on his barns, but he never backed down. The community loses a good man, an example of dedication to the common good."
