Giovanni and Rosaria, married for 63 years: «The secret? Dialogue and react together to life's adversities" . Giovanni Canu and his wife Rosaria Fenude, 88 years old he and 81 she both beautifully carried, have been united in the sacred bond since April 27, 1960 .
It was a Wednesday, when in the church of Baunei, dedicated to San Nicola, Don Mario Gillon married them. Three children were born from their love: Mariano, Maria Paola and Zita Stefania. Today, after a life devoted to work in the fields and butcher shop (closed in 1999), as well as a short period in Germany, they also enjoy 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren .
Signor Giovanni worked in the fields and with the cattle: « I used to go to Abbasanta on foot to sell the cows, then to Ardali together with my cousin Battistina Lai. We slept on sacks and had military jackets to warm us up. I used to transport the milk by bicycle to Girasole where my parents had farms ».
Giovanni is a lively grandfather and every day, with his Fiat Panda, he leaves from Santa Maria Navarrese to reach the small garden on the provincial road 63: « I have 20 hens, a rooster and 2 dogs, plus I grow supplies for the family » .
Rosaria, peasant, butcher and seamstress when necessary, is a woman of faith, devoted to Our Lady of Lourdes. " When I take my pension, I make an offering to Our Lady ." And it doesn't matter if you have to tighten your belt because with the constant price increases, it's hard to make ends meet. « Better to wear an old skirt because the priority is to support the whole family ». Sixty-three years of life together as if it were the first day: « Today young people have everything except patience. In a couple you quarrel, but you have to be good at making peace right away ».
Grandma Rosaria says it, who every night, before going to sleep, recites the rosary. Her husband is also a man of faith: "Until some time ago, on the occasion of Christmas, I assiduously collaborated in the creation of the crib in the parish church".
