October will be the month of the “Romanesque Days” organized by the Sardinia Island of Romanesque Foundation, based in Santa Giusta, where one of the basilicas that best illustrates the style is located.
Every Saturday and Sunday, churches will open their doors free of charge to visitors, allowing them to explore and share the history they have preserved for millennia. Seventy Sardinian municipalities are participating, and approximately 80 churches will be visited by numerous visitors between October 4 and 26, 2025. The event is part of the national program of Romanesque Italy.
Tour guides and schoolchildren will be presenting these places. One of this year's new features is the inclusion of the event in the Regional Department of Tourism's experiential tourism program. This unique feature allows participating municipalities to expand their cultural offerings and propose experiential side events such as workshops, virtual tours, guided visits to archaeological sites, or food and wine events to coincide with the Romanesque Days. Additionally, several towns are also hosting conferences on the world of Romanesque art during midweek events.
But that's not all: after sunset, visitors will be able to experience a true journey back in time to Medieval Sardinia. An artistic installation of numerous electric candles will illuminate the interiors of the churches. This unique and evocative experience will be enhanced by a series of concerts dedicated to visitors to the various Romanesque buildings. The rich program of the Romanesque Days will be presented on Friday, September 26th at the Palazzo Regio in Cagliari.
"October will be a month packed with events for Romanesque enthusiasts, and we encourage you to leave a few weekends free to explore the rich program," comments Antonello Figus, president of the Fondazione Sardegna Isola del Romanico. "The new developments related to experiential tourism are a great incentive to continue firmly on the path we have set out for ourselves. We thank the dioceses and parishes for their collaboration, helping us promote Sardinia's Romanesque heritage. This intense month, which we will be participating in, will also be enriched by conferences, events, conventions, and presentations of new projects the Foundation is undertaking."
