The investigation began after local rumors reached the Carabinieri and led to the arrest of a sixty-five-year- old man from the Nuoro area on charges of cultivating and possessing narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Investigators focused their attention on the countryside of San Vito, in the Basoru area. Here, during an inspection of agricultural land granted to the man on free loan, the Carabinieri discovered a vast cultivation of 1,875 marijuana plants, between 40 and 130 centimeters tall, with a total gross weight of approximately 400 kilograms.
Subsequent searches of the area revealed eight additional sealed cellophane bags containing dried inflorescences of the same substance, weighing approximately 46 kilograms, inside a barn. These bags were also found along with various materials used to cure and process the drug, including fertilizers, pruning shears, backpack sprayers, a cordless drill, and weighing scales.
The large quantity of drugs and all the equipment were seized pending further investigation by the Carabinieri of the RIS. Meanwhile, the arrested man was transferred to prison in Uta.
