He had already signed the permanent contract after a life as a precarious worker. But the dream vanished when, after checks, it was discovered that he had never obtained a middle school diploma.

Stefano Sulas, 65 years old from San Giovanni Suergiu, had stopped at the third grade and the Municipality was unable to stabilize him. «The world collapsed around me – says the worker – we were two LSUs waiting for stabilisation. The other colleague made it. I do not. We went together to the Municipality to sign the contract. A few days passed then what I never imagined happened." After 29 years of socially useful work and an experience in the industrial area of Portovesme Stefano Sulas dreamed of reaching retirement (he will be able to go there in a year and nine months) with a permanent job. «In recent days – he says disheartened – I went to the Municipality to cancel the contract».

The sorrow

«This is terrible news for me – says the worker – I was hoping to have all my documents in order. They should have informed themselves, but instead I discovered that I couldn't have the contract after signing. Nobody told me about my qualifications, I always took all the courses to be able to work. If I had known, I would have also gotten my middle school diploma. In good faith in my self-certification I wrote that I attended up to the third grade. Now I'm waiting to be able to start working as an LSU again, but I'm very disappointed and sorry. I can't give myself peace. I feel like I'm living in a nightmare. After a few years of working in Portovesme I was placed on redundancy and redundancy pay. Later I started doing community work. I have always worked since I was eight years old, taking oxen to the countryside. Mine was a large family and the priority was to bring bread home."

Friends

In the hamlet of Is Urigus, Stefano Sulas' friends are sorry. «In recent days he was very happy to have finally signed the contract – says Giuseppe Steri – we are saddened for Stefano. He worked for many years and just now that he saw retirement approaching he had to suffer this hard blow." «The worker's bitterness is the same felt by the municipal administration which strongly wanted its stabilization - explains the mayor Elvira Usai - but in the face of the legal checks, which we are required to carry out, and which have attested to the lack of the requirement, we can only return the worker to the previous working situation. In fact, from Monday he will start working regularly again for the Municipality, but with the contract from LSU".
