"Following the communication from the Head of the Orthopedics Department, due to the shortage of medical staff, we hereby announce the suspension of night-time emergency availability from July 2nd to August 23rd 2026. This will make it impossible to guarantee consultations for the Emergency Room and for the departments, as well as emergency-urgent interventions pertaining to orthopedics."
This is the content of the internal email circulated at the San Francesco hospital in Nuoro, which certifies a new organizational criticality in the healthcare facility .
The suspension of the Orthopedics Department's nighttime emergency service, expected to last approximately two months, will result in the orthopedic consultation service being unavailable during night hours for the Emergency Department and the wards, as well as the inability to provide emergency care.
This decision, according to Roberto Cappelli, former Health Councilor and former Member of Parliament, is linked to a shortage of medical staff. Cappelli emphasizes that, while the Region claims the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) targets have been met, the hospital situation is quite different. The former councilor notes that an internal communication from San Francesco Hospital highlights the suspension of nighttime emergency service in the Orthopedics Department due to staff shortages, resulting in the inability to provide consultations for the Emergency Room and emergency departments and interventions.
On the topic of hospital services, Cappelli also raises questions about the situation in other departments: Pulmonology. "Is it interesting, or worrying, to know the situation in Pulmonology. Is that too much to ask? I encourage the press to try, but I haven't succeeded... or I can't," he states. For Cappelli, the measure isn't merely organizational in nature. "It's not an organizational detail, but a health warning," he maintains, highlighting the risk to maintaining nighttime care.
