Inspections were underway to combat gangmastering in the countryside. But the Carabinieri discovered a marijuana plantation in the sheepfold in Samassi, near Sa Mandara.
The military personnel from the local station, with the support of their colleagues from Gesturi and Barumini and the Operations and Radiomobile Unit of the Sanluri Company, arrested the two alleged perpetrators of the illegal cultivation, a fifty-three-year-old from Samassi, owner of the company, and a fifty-seven-year-old originally from Assemini.
While the Carabinieri were inspecting working conditions in the sheepfold, their attention was drawn to the movements of the second of the two, who attempted to escape by trying to get rid of three large plastic bags. The man was apprehended. Inside the bags were approximately 3.5 kilos of marijuana. An immediate search of the surrounding area revealed, in the middle of an orchard, a crop of 185 Cannabis indica plants, varying in height between 170 and 220 centimeters.
All the material, including the narcotic substance, was seized for subsequent technical and qualitative investigations to be carried out by the Scientific Investigations Department.
The two farmers will be tried today in a fast-track trial.
