Green energy with zero land consumption. It's not a utopia for Sardinia to embrace the European Green Movement without suffering the devastation of the environment and landscape : simply exploit "the potential for photovoltaic generation on rooftops." This is what is written in the study by two researchers from CRS4, Andrea Pinna and Luca Massidda, who used an algorithm to calculate how much energy could be produced on the island without removing a single field from cultivation and without converting wind turbines into a privileged viewpoint of the island's landmarks. The risk of changes to the microclimate would also be zero, as certified by the scientific community by analyzing the effects of ground-mounted solar panels.

The summary of the study was published in the international journal Applied Sciences. It assigns Sardinia a potential production of 22 terawatt-hours. "Our procedure," Pinna and Massidda wrote in the article, "estimated an annual production of 239 kilowatt-hours per square meter, over a total area of approximately 92 square kilometers." To give an idea of the value of 22 terawatt-hours, this represents production (or consumption) at a constant power of 2,511 megawatt-hours, delivered continuously for 365 days, 24 hours a day. Using Terna data as a reference, this is almost three times Sardinia's electricity demand. It is one-fifteenth of the national consumption, which is around 320 terawatt-hours.
