Rocco the turtle returns to his homeland: a Caretta caretta turtle has been released in Arbatax.
The specimen had become entangled in a tangle of nylon lines and filaments in OctoberRocco, a magnificent male Caretta caretta sea turtle, has finally returned to his homeland.
It was released this morning from the Capannina beach after a long period of treatment and rehabilitation. The specimen, approximately 40 years old, 77 centimeters long, and weighing over 47 kilograms, was rescued last October after becoming entangled in the cables of a pontoon in the waters near the western pier. Its right front flipper was entangled in a tangle of ropes and nylon threads, resulting in a severe lesion.
The recovery was made possible thanks to the timely intervention of the Arbatax Forestry Corps Naval Base, the Coast Guard, and the port's mooring staff. This action allowed the animal to be secured and transferred to the Duemari veterinary clinic in Oristano, which has an agreement with the CReS (Sinis Recovery Center), where it received initial treatment and all phases of maintenance and rehabilitation.
This morning, in the presence of CReS researchers Andrea Camedda and Andrea De Lucia, Blon staff from the Arbatax Forestry Corps, the Coast Guard and many children and onlookers, the deputy mayor Irene Murru and councilor Elena Sestu, Rocco was finally able to set sail again , returning to his natural habitat to the applause of those present.
