A mess and institutional clash have erupted in Cagliari over the move of the vaccination center from the Binaghi building (slated to become a community hospital) to the building in Piazza De Gasperi , which also houses the municipal administrative offices.
The decision by the Local Health Authority—led by Aldo Atzori—had already sparked a heated backlash from consumer associations and unions , who called it inadequate space and a hasty decision. Now, Mayor Massimo Zedda has also responded. Calling it "piquant" is a mild term.
"The city administration received no timely notice of the relocation," the mayor criticized. Two floors of the building are owned by the Local Health Authority (ASL), while the rest is municipal property. "Having to choose an inappropriate location to host such an important service as vaccinations, the most inappropriate choice was made." The reasons for the harsh judgment? "This is due to the extremely high traffic due to the presence of municipal offices, the lack of parking, the location of the ASL facilities on the fifth and sixth floors, the difficulty of moving the refrigerators for vaccine storage, the difficulty for workers loading and unloading the equipment and vials for the vaccinations scheduled for the area, the lack of collaboration with service staff, the failure to identify alternative and more convenient solutions, the opposition of vaccination service staff, and the obvious difficulties for those wishing to be vaccinated."
A disaster, in short, according to Zedda. He also criticizes the manner of the move: "Confirming the rush, it's worth highlighting the failure to provide a freight elevator, as is the case with any private move, and the demand to use the elevators, intended for people, during office hours, as freight elevators with weights not compliant with the lifts' load capacity."
After the beatings, the mayor extends a helping hand: "Despite all this, last week, as soon as we learned of the move, we contacted the Local Health Authority, offering alternative buildings and spaces we own." And today, an inspection was carried out at the municipal premises on Via Abruzzi: according to leaks, the vaccination center will be permanently located in Piazza De Gasperi for five months. Then, it will move to San Michele.
According to Zedda, "it would have been sufficient, having been aware of the move for some time, to base the operation on the City Plan, a framework in which the institutions are working to share and make available buildings and spaces, regardless of ownership and giving priority to the citizens' needs."
