The Region has allocated €4.3 million for the design of four strategic roads . These projects have been defined as "priority" following the needs identified by local authorities: the access road to Elmas Airport, the Santu Lussurgiu-Bonarcado connection on Provincial Road 15, the Tempio-Olbia connection, and the Stintino-Santa Teresa Gallura route on the Porto Torres-Castelsardo road .
These are "four arteries of extraordinary importance", underlines the Councillor for Public Works Antonio Piu , "on which it is necessary to develop the planning activity in order to be able to fully define the typology, characteristics and costs of the works necessary for the strengthening, adaptation and safety, in order to start the construction of some of the strategic itineraries for mobility on the Island".
The resources come from the 2025-2027 budget adjustment, divided into 1.3 million for the 2025 financial year and 3 million for the 2026 financial year.
The Porto Torres-Castelsardo connection is the key road for the municipalities along the northern coastal strip , providing access to Sassari and the island's main northern gateways: Alghero Airport, the Port of Porto Torres, and the Port of Santa Teresa di Gallura. "This is one of the most important routes for the wider Sassari area , as it represents a unique opportunity for the region, both in terms of traffic flow and its strategic importance for tourism," the councilor emphasizes. "On the current coastal road, in the section between Porto Torres and Castelsardo, the coexistence of the two different types of traffic represents a major criticality, exacerbated by the lack of adequate alternative roads ." For this reason, it is essential, both for safety and for traffic-related aspects related to tourist flows, to design a new route that allows the coastal stretch to fully exploit its natural potential, redesigning it with adjustments more suited to the traffic flows towards the Platamona coast. The estimated cost for starting the project is €1.2 million.
The project for the access road to Cagliari-Elmas Airport is estimated at one million euros . The Region explains that the current road system faces numerous challenges, which will be exacerbated by the new commercial center opening in the junction area connecting highways 130 and 391, which will lead to increased traffic volumes. "For this reason," Piu explains, "we accepted the proposal from the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, which highlighted the need to develop a new access system with adequate security measures for access to the airport ."
Then there's the Santu Lussurgiu-Bonarcado connection on provincial road 15. Among the main connections to the city of Oristano, that stretch is currently very tortuous and inadequate for traffic , with negative repercussions on travel times and accessibility to the capital, as well as on road safety. The Province of Oristano has requested an upgrade of the road, with an estimated cost of 500,000 euros for the project .
Finally, the Tempio-Olbia route, built by provincial roads 38 and 136. The Province of Gallura in North East Sardinia has requested adaptation and safety works: «This section – highlights Piu – represents one of the strategic connections of the road system in north-east Sardinia, which connects the two main centres of Gallura, and which is currently characterised by a route which is not suitable both in geometric and functional terms for the needs of transit flows, as well as by unsatisfactory safety conditions, it is therefore also necessary in this case to start a project in order to identify the characteristics and relative costs». For the design of this work, the estimated cost is 1.6 million .
The project, the councilor emphasizes, "is part of a more general plan to review and upgrade the island's entire road network."
