In the end, Ravenna won. Cagliari returned from Rome with a certain disappointment. The Romagna city is the 2026 Capital of the Sea and also received a million euro grant. The title "Italian Capital of the Sea" was established by the Ministry of Maritime Policies to promote projects, initiatives, and activities dedicated to the enhancement and full enjoyment of Italy's maritime culture.

The Cagliari project (Genoa was also in the running) envisioned the reuse of several spaces along the city's waterfront to promote maritime culture and the environmental education area on the Sant'Elia promontory and the surrounding waters.

The plan also included the implementation and improvement of tourist information and reception services, both with regard to the city's maritime traditions and the provision of services for sailing and other water sports.
Nothing doing. The municipality will still be able to try again next year.
