They defrauded an elderly woman in one of the most cowardly ways imaginable, namely by exploiting her love for her grandson: arrested.
The facts date back to September 11, in Mogoro. The over-ninety-year-old had been contacted at home by an anonymous number. On the other end of the line was a self-styled “commander of the Carabinieri”: her nephew, he told her, had been in a car accident. A little girl had been involved and had suffered serious head injuries. The judge, the bizarre story continued, had ruled that in order to keep him from ending up in prison, a large sum had to be paid. The nephew’s mother was already in the barracks “in the throes of a crying fit,” he continued.
After a few minutes, two men in T-shirts and shirts arrived at the woman's house and introduced themselves as collaborators of the Carabinieri: "There is no time to waste - they urged her - it will be your fault if your nephew ends up in jail". Then they asked her for 10 thousand euros or any jewelry or jewels. The elderly woman, forced practically under threat, gave the criminals everything she had in the house, 2,500 euros.
Only a few hours later a relative realized what had happened, the whole affair was reported and the Carabinieri of Mogoro began their investigations. On September 13, at the Port of Olbia, the military of the Carabinieri Company of Mogoro and the Carabinieri Territorial Department of Olbia stopped two suspects, aged 32 and 26, originally from and resident in the province of Caserta , already known to the Police, considered responsible, in collaboration with other individuals, of aggravated extortion to the detriment of a frail and elderly person. The two were boarding the motor vessel departing from Olbia to leave the Island.
Based on the information activity carried out by the Mogoro Carabinieri Station, the Company's Operational and Radiomobile Unit and with the support of the Provincial Operational Department , serious evidence of guilt emerged against the arrested persons who, among other things, had used a Renault Clio registered to a leasing company. Subjected to a search, the two were found in possession of 14,065 euros in cash, 45 gold jewels with an estimated value of 5,000 euros and four smartphones. Both ended up in prison in Bancali at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
