Hundreds gathered this evening in Cagliari , in front of the Bastione Saint Remy , to say "Stop the barbarity" in Gaza . In the Sardinian capital, the demonstration—part of a national mobilization promoted by the CGIL —also saw the massive participation of associations, political parties, and movements, including the Sardinian Press Association . At the heart of the initiative was the urgent need to draw attention to "one of the most serious violations of humanitarian and international law committed by the Israeli government and army in Gaza and the West Bank."
The CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) has expressed strong support for the Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian initiative, which, after departing on August 31st from the ports of Genoa and Barcelona, will see hundreds of vessels set sail tomorrow from Catania, Tunisia, and Greece toward the Gaza Strip. "Each of us can and must express our outrage at what is happening," said the Secretary General of the Sardinian CGIL, Fausto Durante , "because, even though the sites of war may seem distant, the news and images of that barbarity touch our sensibilities deeply, and it is the responsibility of a civilized and democratic people to raise their voices and declare that the genocide must be stopped."
For the CGIL, words are not enough; concrete action is needed from democratic governments that are members of the United Nations and signatories to agreements, treaties, and conventions to respect human rights, the rule of law, justice, and humanitarian law. "Together, if we form a critical mass, if we participate rather than give in to resignation," Durante concluded, "we can express our collective outrage. This is a peaceful yet powerful way to change things, to stop this barbarity."
