They attempted to defraud an elderly woman in Olbia but were discovered . The intervention of a lawyer, Christian Cicoria , was providential. He noticed the victim talking on her cell phone while making a bank transfer inside a post office branch on Via Acquedotto and became suspicious.

"He wanted to make a bank transfer," the lawyer said, "and I immediately realized something was wrong." The victim, with limited mobility, was following instructions on his cell phone from someone who was insisting that he complete certain transactions at the counter.

The same employee, perhaps realizing the anomaly of the situation, blocked the payment, saying it couldn't be made. "But the man on the cell phone insisted we proceed by lowering the requested amount," Cicoria continues. At this point, the lawyer intervened and addressed the person on the other end directly. "There were two of them, with foreign voices, passing the message back and forth, and they started insulting and threatening me."

Meanwhile, the Carabinieri arrived, alerted by the lawyer, and immediately took control of the situation. According to an initial reconstruction, those who had contacted the elderly woman had promised to turn the money, approximately €23,000, into something worthwhile. "I saw that defenseless woman and I felt angry at what was happening. We need to raise awareness on this issue by helping vulnerable groups," comments Christian Cicoria.

Meanwhile, the military are carrying out investigations to trace the perpetrators of the foiled scam.
