“Discriminatory conduct.” “No, a misrepresentation of the facts.”
A blind person exchanged words with the Platamona Health and Care Center regarding an incident that occurred last week at the Sassari facility.
A 52-year-old blind man went to the Center with his guide dog to accompany an acquaintance who needed to undergo a health checkup . "The facility staff," the man claims, "did not allow me to be in the waiting room with other users and companions, and instead ordered me to wait outside the facility, in the park, alone, solely because of the presence of the guide dog." The blind man's behavior was "illegal and discriminatory due to his disability."
In a letter sent to the Nuoro Local Health Authority (ASL) 3 and the National Office Against Racial Discrimination, the 52-year-old "warns the facility against repeating, directly or indirectly, similar conduct toward me or other people with disabilities assisted by guide dogs." He then threatened legal action if his letter was not "adequately responded to."
The company Servizi Salute Benessere Srl, manager of the Platamona Health and Care Center, responded to the letter by denying the content of the accusations and speaking of a "distorted representation of the facts" .
"The staff's intervention," a statement states, "was driven solely by organizational and health-related needs, given the presence of vulnerable patients about to undergo diagnostic tests, including those requiring contrast media, in the dedicated waiting room." The statement confirms that current legislation allows guide dogs in places open to the public, including healthcare facilities, but "at the same time, highlights how, in healthcare settings, it is essential to ensure safety and protection for all patients, including through proportionate organizational measures."
The company also notes that the man was offered another, "equipped and suitable" area. The statement further states, "The facility further specifies that, as part of its standard organization, access to all waiting areas is limited to patients only, with companions permitted only in the initial waiting area and only in cases of genuine necessity, particularly for fragile patients or those undergoing invasive procedures. This organizational criterion is applied in a general and non-discriminatory manner, in order to ensure adequate conditions of safety and care." The company also states that the failure to communicate the companion's arrival with a guide dog prevented "the advance planning of more appropriate reception arrangements that were fully integrated into the healthcare organization." "Our facility operates in full compliance with the regulations and with the utmost attention to human rights," the Center concludes. Addressing the individual who felt discriminated against, the Center states, "If what happened caused any inconvenience, we express our regret and offer our most sincere apologies."
