The Cagliari City Council has approved a motion titled "Cagliari, City of Peace and Dialogue in the Mediterranean," a political and programmatic document that marks a turning point in the city's international positioning. Strongly supported by Mayor Massimo Zedda, the motion's first signatory, and introduced in the Chamber by majority councilor Davide Carta, the initiative aims to make Cagliari a stable hub for the promotion of peace, intercultural dialogue, and cooperation among the peoples of the Mediterranean basin.
During the debate in the Chamber, the city administration's goal emerged: to build a culture of peace through concrete tools and actions, capable of engaging the entire city community and its institutions. Among the measures envisaged in the document are the establishment of a permanent Peace Roundtable, support for global citizenship and nonviolence education in schools, the creation of a Peace Park between the Tuvumannu and Tuvixeddu hills, permanent participation in the Perugia-Assisi March, the recovery and conversion of decommissioned military assets for social purposes, the promotion of humanitarian and health corridors, the establishment of the Mediterranean Festival of Peace and Cultures, the signing of the International Treaty to Ban Nuclear Weapons, and membership in an international network of Mediterranean cities committed to peace. "No one alone can respond to the global challenges of our time," was reiterated during the councilors' remarks. For this reason, the city is calling upon all institutions, from the Region to the University, from the Church to the national government, in a "political and cultural alliance capable of generating a concrete alternative for sustainable development, dialogue, and solidarity."
