Work has been completed at the Quartu municipal velodrome, the sports facility on Via San Francesco with a concrete ring, banked curves, and a central platform . A jewel of the city dedicated to cycling, it has been closed for years.
The velodrome renovation, which cost approximately €1.5 million —funded by the Metropolitan City Pact, the Region, and the Municipality of Quartu—included the functional restoration of the track, constructed with state-of-the-art materials selected in close collaboration with professional cycling, the renovation of the grandstands, complete with dedicated seating for spectators with disabilities, as well as the renovation of the changing rooms and infirmary, also with specific facilities for disabled users. The extensive restyling, the Municipality explains, also included the space within the oval, used by cyclists and clubs during competitive events to store bicycles and various equipment, and the fencing.
"Track, grandstands, fencing, and stands. The velodrome's redesign is complete," commented Antonio Conti, City Councilor for Public Works. "We will now publish the tender for the facility's management , open to companies and associations from across the country. It will be open to anyone who wishes to use the facility to introduce new riders to the sport, especially young people, and therefore for training and practice, but also to host high-level sporting events, thus bringing Quartu into the spotlight far beyond the regional borders. A facility for the people of Quartu and for the enhancement of the city, another step towards Quartu's rebirth."
The management service will therefore focus on promoting, in collaboration with other associations, sports and/or recreational initiatives, guaranteeing discounted rates for young people under 18, over 65, and university students residing in Quartu. It will also include opening and closing the facility, custodial and surveillance services during operating hours, cleaning of adjacent areas, and routine maintenance.
