For thousands of residents, drinking water on the coast of Quartu Sant'Elena will no longer be a mirage: the project – which has been on hold for almost a decade – is now on its way towards completion, which envisages the construction of the water network in Flumini and in the areas of the Margine Rosso, S'Ecca and S'Arrideli, Tanca Fiorita, S.Andrea, Niu Crobu, Is Meris and Capitana.

The turning point came yesterday during the meeting between the municipal administration and the management of Abbanoa, during which an agreement was reached for the resumption of the work.

We will proceed in two phases, with priority given to the completion of the connections between the pipelines already laid and never used and then there will be the construction of a new tank in the areas not yet reached by the water supply.

«One of the main problems was that of providing the most populous areas of the vast Quartese territory with drinking water. For this reason we have proposed to the managing body of the integrated water service to implement a strategy divided into a short-term and a medium-term project», explains the councilor for public works of the Municipality of Quartu, Antonio Conti. «We have met Abbanoa's full willingness to proceed in this direction. Therefore, an excerpt project will be developed by the managing body's technicians in order to put the existing pipelines into operation, in the shortest possible time, by connecting them to the current supply lines. For this operation - underlines the councilor - the resources, equal to 2 million and 500 thousand euros, deriving from the original project and made available for the completion of the works after definition of the functional excerpt, are still available.

«At the same time, the project for the new tank will be prepared, which will see the joint efforts of the Administration of Quartu Sant'Elena and the Abbanoa staff, to identify a solution capable of guaranteeing a constant supply, especially in the areas of S'Ecca and S 'Arrideli and Niu Crobu. An intervention already foreseen in the original project, which we will now recover as it is essential to complete the design of the water network in the non-urban territory », clarifies the commissioner.

The story of drinking water in the hinterland dates back to 2004: the Region had earmarked 8 million euros to carry out the works, entrusting everything to the Municipality.

In 2006, with the transfer of responsibility for the water network to Abbanoa, the project had come into the hands of the managing body. The works had been awarded with a regular contract in March 2011 to a group of companies which was later dissolved and whose parent company was IM.A.DI.CO Srl. Following a series of further vicissitudes, in 2016, Abbanoa formalized the resolution of the contract with the company and decided to re-commission the work. Thus several years passed until a resumption of interlocutions between the Municipality of Quartu and Abbanoa, with various meetings held starting from 2021 and throughout 2022. Up to yesterday's agreement.
