More than a ton of waste was removed from the sea, the beach and the roads during the Plogging stage of the Giro d'Italia in Quartu Sant'Elena , the last of the 46 locations touched by the initiative which combines physical activity to protect environment. An experience borrowed from Sweden and which is also enjoying success in Italy.
About eighty volunteers , most of them from Quartu, who have decided, walking or running, to participate, with the free patronage of the Municipality of Quartu Sant'Elena, in cleaning the coast and some paths, a record number.
The participants split into five teams.
The first carried out a 4 km trekking route, collecting waste, from Margine Rosso to Sant'Anastasia.
The second dealt with the sea, operating aboard a dinghy and with diving suits.
Another group beat Provincial 17, the Army team at the mouth of the Rio Foxi.
Finally, a "lighter" route on the beach.
Launched in Pordenone on 23 January, the initiative has made it possible to collect several tons of garbage, with the stated aim of "freeing cities, paths, woods and beaches from waste abandoned or 'lost' on the street".
