Ramon Pirosu and Maria Cristina Falchi had already tried to kill Marco Pusceddu, but the ambush failed and the two – colleague and former partner of the 118 rescuer – decided to hire two hitmen recruited in a gypsy camp in Carbonia.

The dress rehearsal aired on the night of April 28, 2025 (a few months before the crime of August 7) on the outskirts of Carbonia, in a remote lay-by on provincial road 2.

Pirosu and Falchi arranged a dinner with the victim and then, at the end of the evening, faked a flat tire. During the break, while Pusceddu was bent over the tire to be changed, Pirosu grabbed an ice axe and hit him on the back of the head . But Pusceddu got up, and thus began a scene in which Pirosu called Falchi on the phone: she arrived at the lay-by and the three left together an hour and a half later, to the emergency room in Carbonia.

Pusceddu suffered a compound skull fracture and internal bleeding. It remains unclear why the man didn't report the two; instead, he accepted the couple's initial story, according to which a third party had committed the attack . This story is unlikely to be credible; in a dark and isolated parking lot, the arrival of any car would not have gone unnoticed.
