Only eight of the 44 cars that went up in smoke in the Punta Molentis fire in Villasimius were worth over €1 million. Having completed the damage count, not including environmental damage, the Prosecutor's Office has completed the collection of complaints filed by the owners of the vehicles that were parked in the Mediterranean scrub near the cove and were destroyed by the fire.
In total, 44 cars were destroyed, more than half of which were owned by private companies that had rented them to tourists vacationing on the island.
A quick glance at the list of complaints gives an idea of the damage caused by the July 27 fire. Two Porsche Cayennes, several BMW X4s, a pair of Audi Q6s and Q4s, and two Teslas were incinerated, along with several other mid- to high-end cars rented at various airports across the island. Among the first injured parties identified in the investigation by Deputy Prosecutor Andrea Vacca, the public prosecutor who, together with investigators from the Regional Forestry Corps, is attempting to reconstruct the incident to identify the arsonists and those responsible, are said to include two magistrates residing on the mainland who were in Sardinia on vacation, several well-known businessmen from Cagliari, and numerous foreign tourists.
In the meantime, the men of the Forestry Investigative Unit have now identified with certainty the point where the fire started, on the edge of a little-traveled road.
