Light and sound signals are coming to signal the passage of deer, fallow deer and wild boars and to dissuade the animals from crossing the road : the instruments will appear along state road 195 starting this summer.

An endless massacre of ungulates and wild boars, countless road accidents caused, which also caused the death of a tourist last summer: the agreement between the Region and the Municipalities that daily experience first-hand the problem of road safety endangered by wild animals is starting to produce some results.

The Municipality, together with the Regional Agency Forestas and its veterinarian, Lucio Mandas, has decided to rely on a new dual technology that allows drivers to be warned of the presence of animals on the road and, at the same time, emits sound signals of dissuasion that imitate the sounds of other predatory animals, thus causing them to move away from the road.

The instruments will be installed in the sections of the Sulcitana artery where, more than any other, road accidents caused by the passage of wild fauna have occurred in recent years.

Mayor Walter Cabasino, who in recent years has been in contact with the Region to address the problem, explains how the system that aims to eliminate the number of road accidents will work : "The system is composed of a control unit and two road signs powered by a solar panel, to signal the presence of wild fauna. The system works through one or more infrared sensors that record the passage of animals and transmit the information via radio to an electronic control unit, which immediately activates a signal. A radar sensor records whether the vehicle slows down to the desired speed: otherwise the system doubles the flashing of the optical signals to increase the attention of the motorist to pay attention to caution."

Stefano Deidda, Councilor for Roads, emphasizes the importance of the meetings held with other bodies over the last two years: "Thanks to discussions with the Region and in particular with the Department of the Environment, we have managed to obtain significant funding that will allow us to address a particularly serious problem that has been present for years, such as the presence of wild fauna near the State Road 195, where several dozen road accidents occur every year. Thanks to this system, we expect to significantly reduce the number of road accidents."
