The island's fauna has lost a splendid specimen of Sardinian deer, shot to death by a poacher in the countryside of Uta.

The rescue attempt by the Forestry Corps was in vain: the injuries sustained proved too serious.

The Forestry Corps itself announced this in a statement, which reads: "A magnificent 4-5 year-old male Sardinian deer was rescued yesterday by the Uta Forestry Station in the Sa Spindula area . The animal, the victim of poaching, had been hit by a broken gunshot and was in very critical condition. The Cagliari Metropolitan Area Veterinarian, Nicola Maggio , rushed to the scene and administered emergency sedation to ensure safe transport. The deer was then transferred by the Forestry Corps patrol to the Forestry Agency's Wildlife Breeding and Recovery Center (CARFS) in Monastir."

Despite immediate hospitalization and treatment, the Forestry Commissioner's statement continues, the animal's condition immediately appeared very serious: the gunshot wounds, combined with the loss of control of its hind limbs, left no chance.
In the afternoon, the deer died despite the assistance of the veterinarians and technicians of the Forestas Agency."

Following the incident , investigations were launched to identify those responsible for the poaching and then prosecute them according to the law.
