"Six days ago, I wrote to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to challenge a decision made without discussion, without warning, and without institutional respect. Six days later, no response."
Governor Alessandra Todde stated this in a Facebook post focusing on the Region's opposition to the announced transfer of around one hundred inmates serving harsh prison regimes to Sardinian penitentiaries.
"The transfer of a very large number of prisoners under the 41-bis regime to Sardinia is a serious act: it breaks the loyal collaboration between the State and the Region and ignores the consequences for the safety, healthcare, and social stability of the region," explains Todde.
"On June 18th," the governor's post continues, "I had already written to the Minister of Justice to express specific concerns. On September 10th, in a personal meeting, Minister Nordio assured me that no decision would be made without discussion. Today we discover that those commitments were not fulfilled; the transfer was ordered by the Department of Public Prosecutor's Office with a simple administrative memo, without involving the Region."
"Sardinia," Todde continues, "is considered by judicial authorities to be at high risk of mafia development. And every prisoner under the 41-bis regime represents a huge cost to an already struggling healthcare system, entirely borne by Sardinian citizens. Its insularity, which the Constitution recognizes as a disadvantage to be compensated for, is instead used as a logistical advantage for the state. An unacceptable paradox."
"I asked for only one thing: to stop unilateral decisions and immediately open a genuine, fair, and responsible dialogue. Sardinia is not running away from its responsibilities. But it is not willing to accept them," concluded the regional president.
